  • FDA Urged to Monitor Nanotechnology

If you've been following the newest trends in skin care, you've probably heard of a new term: nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a new buzzword in skin care and the cosmetics industry; it refers to the use of very small molecules to help deliver treatments below the skin's surface.

  • Lip Fills Improve Looks, But Not All Lip Fillers Are Safe

Lip augmentation, the process of injecting the lips and area around the lips with dermal fillers, is being more frequently requested in the doctor's office.

Patients seek lip augmentation because they want larger, sexier lips, and, also, they want to decrease or reduce the signs of aging. Injectable dermal fillers can combat thinness and wrinkling of the lips and mouth, but not all dermal fillers are safe for use in the lip and mouth area.

  • Families share athletes foot, toenail fungus

While it has long been believed that athlete's foot and toenail fungus could be transmitter from person to person, apparently that has not been well documented in scientific research, until now. Using advanced molecular biology techniques, scientists have now confirmed that toenail fungus and athlete's foot could infect people living in the same house.

  • Cosmetic Surgery: Are You SURE?

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons recently published a concise checklist for consumers considering cosmetic surgery. The checklist is in the form of the acronym, SURE, with each letter offering some guidance for how to decide if you're ready to pursue plastic surgery.

If you're considering cosmetic surgery, but want to be SURE you're ready (sorry, sorry, just couldn't resist!), the checklist offers:

  • FDA Approves Noxafil Treatment for Fungal Infections

A new breakthrough in treatment of fungal infections came this week as the FDA approved Noxafil (posaconazole) for the prevention of infections caused by certain molds and yeast-like fungus such as Aspergillus and Candida.

The FDA approved the drug for use in those patients with weakened immune systems (such as following a bone marrow transplant) and for those patients with decreased white blood cell counts (such as follows chemotherapy for cancer).

  • Botox may be Addictive

A recent study reported in the BBC News finds that Botox users may actually become addicted to the procedure. Possibly easy to understand, as Botox procedures are reasonably quick, relatively painless, and allow you smoother, younger looking skin in just a few minutes. Who wouldn't want that?

  • Scratching may stimulate pleasure centers in the brain

Dermatitis (inflammation of the skin) impacts more than 6 million people each year, many of whom seek medical relief for their itchiness. Dermatitis can be triggered by any number of skin conditions, common household ingredients, or animals.

  • Consumer Perceptions of Cosmetic Surgery 2006

The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) recently surveyed American consumers on their opinions of cosmetic surgery, as well as whether they would consider having cosmetic surgery now or in the future.

The results showed that only about 6% of those surveyed have done, but almost 20% of the population plans to do at some point in their lives.

  • Thermal Water: Skin Do or Skin Don't?

I've long suspected that the Europeans know some thing about skincare that they're just not sharing with us folks across the pond. One of their secrets- just recently come to America- is thermal water.

Thermal water, as it sounds, comes from natural hot springs in Europe. These waters naturally carry minerals like selenium and sulfur; and they are free of chlorine and other chemicals.

The European thermal springs have a long-lived reputation for health and healing benefits. You may have heard of the English city of Bath, which was famous for its therapeutic springs. People would travel from all over to "take the waters" for better physical, emotional, and mental health.

  • MRSA on the rise in hospitals.

The August issue of the New England Journal of Medicine published reports from UCLA researchers who found that methicillin-resistant staphlococcus aureas (MRSA) is being seen more and across hospitals in the nation. MRSA is resistant to those antibiotics most commonly used to treat skin infections, such as cephalexin and dicloxacillin.

MRSA was first noted in health care settings in the 1960's, usually among those patients who had been hospitalized or were in nursing homes long term. In the past few years, however, a new type of MRSA has emerged; this type impacts people outside of health care settings.

  • Keep Your Young Son Away from Certain Beauty Products

A line of research released a few weeks ago suggests that certain beauty products, especially those containing lavender and tea-tree oil can have unwanted effects on pre-pubescent boys. Specifically, these ingredients may lead to gynecomastia (abnormally large breasts in men).
